If you can’t deploy a full-sized HF dipole antenna, please try this “Cobra Antenna” from Chuck (KK6UDY).
The antenna is a linear loaded system used to shrink the total antenna length while preserving basic dipole performance. The antenna is designed to fit into small urban spaces, such as a small backyard or garden.
Those living in deed-restricted properties (HOAs and CC&Rs) may find this antenna suitable for their operations.
Chuck KK6USY builds a compact 80-meter wire antenna utilizing 24-gauge silicone wire and 3D-printed spreaders for linear loading. The project demonstrates a step-by-step approach to creating a durable, stealthy antenna suitable for limited spaces.

Here’s a simple way to increase the gain of your vertical antenna.
In this video, Tim (K5OHY) shows us how to build and mount a 2-element 20 meter band vertical antenna on a wooden fence. According to Time, this configuration produces a moderate 2.9 dBi gain over a single 1/4 wave vertical antenna.
Tim gives us a list of basic materials and procedures needed to complete this easy-to-do project.
Here is an update with more information on this parasitic array: • 2 Element Quarterwave Array: 2.9dB over Si… This is a simple 2-element 1/4 vertical using a parasitic director. CW portion of 20m: Driven Element: ~17 ft resonant at 14.05 MHz. Director: ~16.2 ft tuned to 14.75 MHz (5% higher) Radials: Two per element, 16.5 ft Spacing: 10.5 ft (3.20 m) ≈ 0.15λ at 14.05 MHz
Tim – K5OHY demonstrates how to mount a two-element vertical beam antenna on a wooden fence to overcome HOA restrictions and improve DX capabilities. This practical setup for 20 meters uses inexpensive mirror mounts to enhance signal strength toward Europe.

2 Element Quarterwave Array: 2.9dB over Single PERformer!
Thanks to William Brenner (N4WRB) for this simple, effective vertical antenna for 10M to 160M.
The antenna system consists of selected Chameleon products, such as the Chameleon URT 1 tuner, Chameleon SS25 telescoping mast, and the Chameleon Capacitiance Hat.
If you can’t make the Chameleon price point, you can build your own from materials found locally or through other online vendors.
The antenna performs well, considering its small size and footprint.
William Benner demonstrates mounting a Chameleon URT tuner directly to an aluminum fence to serve as a ground plane. Using a modified 25-foot whip with a homemade capacitance hat attachment, this vertical antenna system allows for tuning across a wide range of HF bands.
In a location where you can’t put up a highly visible antenna for HF? A slim HF whip on a gutter or balcony can be your key to some form of HF activity. In this video I construct a quick to make 1.5m long loaded vertical and try for some FT8 DX contacts. If you had to make an emergency antenna with only a few parts you had on hand, could you do it?
That was the issue facing Chuck (KK6USY) on a recent motorcycle trip.
In this video, Chuck shows us how he made a simple, effective antenna from parts he found during his trip.
Depending on what you find in your “junk box”, the cost of a new antenna may be minimal–just use your imagination to save some money, while learning to assemble an antenna from “scratch.”
